Amazonian River Dolphins in Brazil

Amazonian River Dolphins live in a world that is unlike any other cetacean.

Each year seasonal rains turn the Amazon into a flooded rainforest, one of the most unique habitats on Earth.

Known locally as botos, Amazonian River Dolphins look prehistoric as they weave through trees and glide across sunlit shallows. Meeting them in this setting is one of the world’s most unforgettable experiences.

What makes this expedition worthwhile

Days on the water icon

5 days on the water — plus 2 extra flex days to maximize our chances

Weather in Norway can be unpredictable, so we built in two additional “flex” days to increase our chances of good encounters. Few other operators give you this much flexibility on the water.

January crowds icon

Fewer boats + fewer crowds in January

The Orcas are still here in January, but the peak-season crowds are not. That means quieter seas, fewer boats, and a more intimate experience.

Heated boat icon

Best-in-class heated boat + veteran captain

Our covered and heated boat makes all the difference in the winter cold, and our captain is trusted by blue-chip film crews like BBC’s Blue Planet.

Wetsuit icon

Custom cold-water gear you can keep and all meals included

If you choose to get gear from us, it’s not a rental. You will receive a custom made cold-water wetsuit to keep after the trip. Home-cooked meals are included too, saving you money.

Lofoten icon

Extension to see the spectacular Lofoten Islands

If you choose to add the Lofoten extension, you will step into one of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Norway: towering granite peaks, colorful fishing villages, and northern lights over quiet harbors.

Talks icon

Learn why so many Orcas come to Norway

Evening whale talks will help you get a deeper understanding of why this is one of the most extraordinary gatherings of whales on Earth.

Exploring the unique lives of Amazonian River Dolphins in the flooded rainforests of Brazil.

In this part of Brazil Amazonian River Dolphins have long been thought to have magical properties, and we will be going to an equally magical place to see them. Every year seasonal rains flood the forest, creating an opportunity to see river dolphins weaving through the trees with golden sunlight reflecting off the shallow sand — a truly special experience.

This 7-day small-group expedition is based on a private liveaboard boat with just six guests. Each traveler has a single room, and meals are prepared by a private chef. The liveaboard allows us to be in the right place at the right time to meet the dolphins when they are most active, while also exploring the Amazon’s flooded forests, towering samaúma trees, and the channels of Anavilhanas National Park.

Along the way, we’ll learn about the hidden lives and cultural lore of the botos, visit riverine communities, and reflect on the ecology of one of the world’s great rivers. The trip includes all activities, meals, airport transfers, and accommodation—designed to be immersive, ethical, and unforgettable.

What you will experience

  • Encounters with Amazon River Dolphins (botos) — respectful, no-feeding interactions in the flooded forest

  • Exploring the Amazon — beyond the dolphins we will explore the Amazon itself with its flooded forests, immense trees, and winding waterways

  • Learning the hidden story of botos — from their unique freshwater lifestyle to the mystical lore they hold in Brazilian culture

  • A liveaboard in the rainforest — private single rooms and a chef on board, keeping you close to the dolphins and the rhythms of the Amazon

  • Community connections — visit riverine and Indigenous communities to understand the human side of this unique place

  • A taste of Manaus — al fresco dining in the historic district near the Teatro Amazonas

FAQs

What are the chances of seeing Amazon River Dolphins?
Very high. We expect encounters on most days we go out, though interactions always depend on conditions and the dolphins’ mood.

What are the interactions like?
We visit a remote part of the Rio Negro where there is a flooded forest above a sandy bottom. We wade into the shallows and let the dolphins approach us. They are curious and often come very close, sometimes even giving a gentle “poke.”

Is this ethical? How is it different from other trips?
We try to never feed or use fish to lure dolphins. We believe natural, unpressured encounters are better for both dolphins and people. This approach has led to more authentic and consistent experiences.

Do I need experience to join?
No. There are no prerequisites, just a willingness to listen and learn. We will be in shallow water.

Will we see other species?
We often see Tucuxi (another river dolphin species) from the boat, though they rarely interact in the water. Guests may also have the chance to visit a research center in Manaus where Amazonian Manatees are being rehabilitated.

What makes this trip unique?
We focus on low-impact encounters on the dolphins’ terms, with evening talks on the Amazon’s unique flooded forest ecosystem and status of river dolphins around the world. We also visit riverine and Indigenous communities to understand the human side of the Amazon.

How big is the group?
Maximum of 6 guests, keeping encounters small, personal, and low impact.

What gear and clothing should I bring?

  • In the water: Mask, snorkel, swimsuit, and a long-sleeve rash guard for sun protection.

  • On land: Lightweight, breathable long sleeves, hat, and sun protection.

  • Conditions: Water ~28°C (very warm); air 25–30°C with daily rain showers possible. Most people are comfortable in a swimsuit + rash guard.

Is it safe?
Yes. The Rio Negro’s acidic water naturally reduces mosquitos, so insect exposure is far lower than most expect. Swimming is safe—piranhas and parasites are not an issue in this part of the Amazon.

What vaccinations do I need?
The WHO recommends a Yellow Fever vaccination, but it is not required. Long-sleeved clothing and repellent are usually sufficient for comfort and protection from mosquitos.

How much does the trip cost, and what’s included?
$4,900 per person.

  • Included: All activities, accommodation, transfers, meals, and talks. Guests have single rooms on the liveaboard, and shared rooms in Manaus on arrival/departure days.

  • Not included: Flights, drinks, personal expenses, gratuities, and optional single room upgrades in Manaus.

Do I need a visa for Brazil?

  • USA, Canada, Australia: Yes, an e-visa is required. Apply online through VFS, cost is $80.90.

  • UK, EU, and most other countries: No visa required.
